The Office of Undergraduate Education in the Division of Academic Affairs is charged with developing the vision and policies that shape the undergraduate educational experience at UB. In this role it also has the responsibility to provide oversight and implementation of undergraduate education curriculum development and initiatives to enhance the academic experience. To carry out that mission, the associate deans of undergraduate education are full partners in this enterprise, and are designated with responsibilities for advice and counsel on academic matters managed by the dean of undergraduate education as well as curriculum and program review and approval.
The first area for which the associate deans shall assist is with advice and counsel regarding initiatives to enhance the undergraduate student educational experience. Recent examples of such topics have included General Education, Dean’s List requirements, unique grading schemes for individual courses, policy for special topics courses, enrollment management, Finish in 4 and various transfer policies. All such issues benefit from a broad discussion that encompasses the spectrum of decanal units and the implications of programmatic and policy changes.
In the consideration of new initiatives, the associate deans’ insight and assessment is essential in judging the value of the proposal, its feasibility, consideration of comparable actions at other institutions, potential conflicts with other policies or programs, and support for promotion to other campus authorities, such as the Faculty Senate or provost, if necessary.
The second area that requires their participation includes the curriculum and program review and approval for new courses, curriculum revisions and new programs proposed by the campus. Their recommendations will serve as the final input to the multi-level review process starting at the departmental or program level; proceeding to review at the school, college or decanal level; and culminating in a final review and recommendation from the dean of undergraduate education to the senior vice provost prior to implementation or further approval to SUNY/SED. When curricular proposals are forwarded to the dean, the associate deans will:
The associate deans for undergraduate education will serve as the final stage in the review process, and therefore will apply a university-wide perspective to all decisions considering the demands placed on departments, colleges/schools or programs outside the initiating unit. However, in matters pertaining to specific course or curriculum content, the council should defer to the school/college or department level whenever possible.
Finally, the associate deans are invited to bring attention to any matters affecting the undergraduate experience that need review and amendment.
To meet these needs, the associate deans will be convened on a monthly basis with a prepared agenda and supporting materials as needed to address these matters.
